What is Mindfulness, can it help and can you do it?
It’s easy to rush through life without stopping to notice much, especially in these strange and difficult times. So it’s more important than ever to keep yourself physically and mentally well.
Paying more attention to the present moment – to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you – can improve your mental wellbeing.
Some people call this awareness “mindfulness”. Mindfulness can help us enjoy life more and understand ourselves better. You can take small, simple steps to developing it in your own life.
Mindful meditation: this involves sitting silently and paying attention to thoughts, sounds, the sensations of breathing or parts of the body, bringing your attention back whenever the mind starts to wander.
Yoga and Tai-chi: these can also help with developing awareness of your breathing. You can access free sessions online either with your regular teacher or via outlets such as You Tube, where you will find free sessions at a time to suit you.
Other good ideas are activities that you can do alone that will allow you to concentrate on something creative such as mindful colouring, doing jigsaw puzzles, painting, drawing or crafting projects. Just take some time out of your daily tasks and your busy thoughts.
You could also download an app on your phone or tablet – the most popular and well-known are Calm & Headspace.
Calm App, who say their mission is to make the world a happier and healthier place. They are devoted to helping you live mindfully, sleep better and breathe deeper.
Headspace. In addition to their app, they currently have a new series that can be accessed via Netflix, called ‘Headspace Guide to Meditation’. These short programs are great to do at home.
We hope this has helped you today. Take care of yourselves.
